FAQ · Therapy in Michigan
From cost and insurance to how long therapy takes and whether telehealth really works — here are honest answers to the questions we hear most often.
Book a Session →How much does therapy cost at Align Minds?
The cost depends on your insurance plan. We are in-network with most major insurers in Michigan, and with insurance most clients pay a copay of $20–$60 per session depending on their plan. We also offer self-pay rates for clients whose insurance we don't accept — contact us for current pricing. We do not currently accept Medicaid or Medicare.
Do you accept my insurance?
Align Minds is in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, United Healthcare, and HAP. We do not currently accept Medicaid or Medicare. Use our insurance checker to see estimated coverage for your specific plan before you book.
How does telehealth therapy work?
Telehealth therapy works just like in-person therapy — the same conversation, the same connection, the same therapeutic work — conducted over a secure HIPAA-compliant video platform. You join your session from wherever you are in Michigan: your home, your parked car, or any private space with a stable internet connection. Sessions are typically 50 minutes. All you need is a device with a camera and a quiet, private place to sit.
Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes. A substantial body of research shows that telehealth therapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person therapy for most concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationship issues. Many clients actually find it easier to be open and honest from the comfort of their own space — and the elimination of travel time removes one of the most common barriers to consistent attendance.
How long does therapy take?
There's no universal answer — it depends on what you're working through, your goals, and how therapy unfolds for you. Some clients come for a focused 8–12 session intervention around a specific issue. Others benefit from longer-term work over many months. Your therapist will discuss a rough timeline with you in the first few sessions, and your progress is always reviewed collaboratively. You are never locked in — you can pause or end therapy whenever it feels right.
How do I know if therapy is working?
Progress in therapy isn't always linear, and it often doesn't look the way people expect. Signs it's working include feeling more understood and less alone, noticing patterns you didn't see before, responding differently to situations that used to trigger you, sleeping better, experiencing more moments of genuine ease, and feeling more capable of handling difficulty when it arises. Your therapist will regularly check in on your goals and adjust the approach based on what's helping and what isn't.
What if I don't connect with my therapist?
The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in therapy outcomes — and fit is genuinely personal. If after two or three sessions you don't feel heard, comfortable, or like the approach is right for you, it's completely appropriate to say so. A good therapist won't be offended. At Align Minds, we have a team of therapists with different backgrounds, styles, and specialties. If one isn't the right match, another may be — and we'll help you find that fit.
What do you specialize in?
Our team of licensed therapists specializes in a range of concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, relationship issues, grief and loss, life transitions, stress management, teen and adolescent counseling, and more. We use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and others tailored to each client's needs.
Is everything I share in therapy confidential?
Yes — what you share in therapy is protected by strict confidentiality laws. There are narrow legal exceptions: if you disclose that you intend to harm yourself or someone else, if child or elder abuse is disclosed, or if a court subpoenas records. Your therapist will review these limits with you in your first session. Outside of those exceptions, nothing you share leaves the session without your written consent.
